Aylsham district churches launch 12 Towers Festival

2017: Over 100 events will be taking place throughout June at twelve parish churches in the Aylsham area of Norfolk, most of which are free or donation only. It is billed as a month-long celebration of the communities in and around Aylsham.

The aims of the Festival are to give people opportunities to discover more about themselves and their communities, to affirm the rich and diverse heritage and culture of rural Norfolk and to celebrate the relationships and partnerships which support rural communities. It will showcase a varied array of events - ranging from heritage, culture and the arts; to spirituality, community and family fun.

Aylsham Team Churches 600CFThe twelve churches involved are Aylsham, Badersfield, Blicking, Brampton, Burgh, Buxton, Cawston, Haveringland, Heydon, Lammas, Marsham and Oxnead; and between them they’ve come up with a huge array of activities from concerts to a ‘Terrific Towers’ Activity Day with climbing tower; from a tour of the RAF Coltishall Control Tower to a Beer and Band Evening with Wildcraft Brewery.

Organised by the churches that form the Aylsham & District Team Ministry, and in partnership with Broadland District Council and Norfolk Museums Service, the festival promises to offer something for everyone.

Generous sponsorship from Broadland District council has funded the production of a full colour brochure to promote the event and the Norfolk Museums service will be curating some exciting exhibitions in some of the churches.  Broadland have also agreed to fund a Digital Exhibition which will tell the story of some of communities, though image, music and artefacts; along with a cycle route covering 15 local churches.

Revd Canon Andrew Beane 2017 6Revd Canon Andrew Beane, pictured, who leads the Aylsham District Team Ministry, said ‘Across the Team we are really excited about The Twelve Towers Festival and how it will bring our churches and communities together celebrating heritage, music, culture.  The festival will also bring together different generations and will offer events and activities for our schools and local families.   We are delighted that the festival also gave us an opportunity to work the Broadland Tourist Officer and Norfolk Museum Service and they caught our vision of using our Church buildings in creative and innovative ways to inspire our communities."

The Rt Revd Graham James, Bishop of Norwich, said "The 12 Towers Festival is a wonderful initiative bringing the communities of the Aylsham & District Team Ministry together for a special month of celebrations.  The range of activities is huge.  May the blessings experienced be equally magnificent."

Samantha Johns, Collections Development Manager, Norfolk Museums Service, said "The Museums Service is thrilled to have been involved in this project.  We welcome the opportunity to bring alive the rich local heritage by taking objects from the collections to new audiences and venues in the district.  During the 12 Towers Festival visitors will be able to talk to Norfolk Museums staff and see objects in local context - we look forward to meeting you."

Cllr Karen Vincent, Broadland District Council's Member Champion for Heritage, said "Broadland District Council is delighted to be a supporting partner of the 12 Towers Festival.  We have enjoyed working with the Aylsham & District Team Ministry and bringing different community organisations together and look forward to the diverse range of events on offer.

Radio station organiser Kandi Kammoun said "Pop, Corn & Grace FM will be taking to the airwaves again from their studio in Aylsham Parish Church - June 1 to 4. We will be looking ahead to the 12 Towers Festival events coming up during June along with broadcasting some of the events live with interviews and comments from all the churches and community organisations involved."
