15,000 gifts from Norwich to Romania children

WroxhamRoadShoeboxesTwo huge trucks containing almost 15,000 shoeboxes packed with Christmas toys, clothes and gifts have made their way from Norwich to needy children in Romania through Operation Christmas Child.

They are among the 50,000 boxes heading to Romania from the UK as part of the Christian Samaritan’s Purse project.

The total includes over 300 boxes from Wroxham Road Methodist Church and around 50 from White Woman Lane Methodist Church as well as from many other churches, schools and groups across the city.

Rev Nigel Fox said: “Friends at Wroxham Road have been so encouraged by the warm response to this year’s shoebox appeal. Operation Christmas Child has sparked the imagination once again and, this year, some additional help has boosted the efforts.

Wroxham Road organisers, Ron and Laura King, thanked children at both Sparhawk and Cecil Gowing First Schools in Sprowston, the Sprowston Childminders, the Kirby-Bedon Church, the villagers of Rockland St Mary, Sprowston Nursery Playgroup for their donations.

“When we started off this year, we had no idea we’d end up with so many boxes to pass on to the collection point,” they said. “The scale of response has doubled… which is fantastic, really. So many boxes may mean more work, but it’s an important task. We know they’ll all be greatly used to bring the love of God into many poor children’s lives.”

Samaritan’s Purse is committed to meeting the needs of under-privileged people through the delivery of practical every day items and necessities. It addresses critical needs of victims of war, poverty, famine, disease, and natural disaster while sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in a simple and practical way.

It was formed as Samaritan’s Purse International in 1990, and merged with Operation Christmas Child in 1995. The work continues to grow, delivering over 1 million shoeboxes to 14 countries in 2005.
