Church plans return to site of Norwich blaze

ZionFireSignA temporary church could soon be built on the site of the former Mount Zion Family Life Centre in Norwich which was destroyed by fire three years ago.

Plans have been submitted to Norwich City Council to create a new temporary site for the Norwich Family Life Church originally situated in the Mount Zion building on Heartsease Lane which was ravaged by fire in February 2006.

The temporary church, which is to be made with ribbed metal cladding, would be open from 7am until 11pm at night Monday to Friday and 9am - 8am on Saturdays and 9am until 10am on Sundays and bank holidays.

The church has had a presence on the Heartsease site since the fire with a temporary building serving as classrooms and an office on the site. It has also been using Drayton Hall just off Drayton High Road as a base for church services.

But planning permission for the site on Heartsease Lane included a limitation that the buildings be removed by May 18 this year - prompting this new application.

A design and access statement submitted together with the planning application states: “The termination of the time-limited planning approval for the temporary classrooms and offices currently on the site will mean the loss of these social and community facilities unless they can be replaced a by a new temporary building.

“The church wishes to re-establish its presence on its site by the erection of a temporary church.

“The church has instructed us to prepare a design for a permanent replacement building on this site but this will not be available until at least 2011.”

Mark Nolan, the agent who is overseeing the plans on behalf of the Norwich Family Life Church, said: “The church are keen to get back to Heartsease and be able to do their work with the youths there as that is their catchment area.”
