Emmaus Norwich was formed in 2010 and continues the Sisters’ of All Hallows long tradition of providing social care within the convent’s grounds at Ditchingham. Emmaus Norwich is the humble custodian of acclaimed buildings with strong local heritage value as a former convent, junior school, artist colony, guesthouse and home for battered and vulnerable women.

Emmaus Norwich is the 22nd Emmaus Community in the UK, part of a worldwide movement of over 300 member groups in 36 countries providing homes, companionship and work in self-sustaining communities to homeless people. The aim of each Emmaus community is to become self-sustaining through re-use, recycling and refurbishment activities.

The Emmaus principle is “that men and women from all walks of life meet and learn about one another, through working together, sharing common goals, combating injustice and seeking to enable the poor to build their own future”, by:

  •       solidarity through a common outlook, life and work;
  •       reaching out to any group or persons living in a precarious or marginal existence, as well as those seeking a new way of life;
  •       work that provides resources to enable the group to live as well as help others;
  •      sharing all experience, resources and skills as well as the risks inherent in the fight for justice; and
  •      a social and political commitment based on actions, and denouncing and working against any kinds of injustice or oppression, and fighting for a just and humane world.

Companions are free to remain within an Emmaus community for as long as they need; some move on quickly into mainstream society and employment, others remain for as long as necessary.
