Christians urged to walk alongside Norwich homeless

HIAwimsCF
Norwich-based Christian charity Hope Into Action is gearing up for a month of fundraising with several events planned for October, including an appeal for people to donate shoes.

Hope Into Action (HIA) helps homeless people in Norwich to have a new start by partnering with local churches to give them the support they need. Their fundraising campaign ‘Walk in My Shoes’ encourages people to consider what it is like to be homeless by symbolically stepping into their shoes – if only for a night.

Norwich Co-ordinator Kate Doran-Smith said, “For the month of October, we will be calling on the support of the city and asking for your help as we fundraise. Not having statutory funding frees us from some boundaries and restrictions that other supported housing providers have to stick to, but it also means we are reliant on the goodwill of others to maintain and grow this ministry in Norwich and beyond.”

Shoe sale – October 1 at Princes Street

HIA are appealing for donations of good quality shoes for a shoe sale. Shoes can be donated at the office at Princes’ Street. The day on October 1 will also offer pedicures and foot massages with a suggested donation attached. Kate said, “Foot washing is mentioned several times in the bible and we want to give it a modern day twist!” There will also be craft activities around the Ephesians 5 verse of 'walking in the way of love' and there will be refreshments available too.

Night shift – throughout October

Last year, 25 people slept rough one night and raised over £1500 of vital funds for HIA. Kate said, “This year we want every night of October covered by someone sleeping somewhere other than their normal bed and getting sponsored for it. Whether you're sleeping rough, organising a girly sleepover, camping in your garden or sleeping in your church hall, we would love for you to use your imagination and get involved.”

Prayer walk – throughout October

Norfolk Christians are encouraged do a sponsored walk for HIA at some point during October, and to pray as they walk, as this has become a tradition at the heart of HIA Norwich. Could you walk a mile a day for a month? Take one Sunday afternoon out to walk round Whitlingham? Jog round Earlham Park with your children? Whatever it is, contact HIA for a sponsor form and have a go! Perhaps a group from church could do it together on Oct 31st?

The Ball – October 22

Sat 22nd October. 'The Ball'. A formal ball at Princes St URC from 7pm - 10pm. £15 a ticket. Live entertainment from Soprano Emma Nuule, stand up comic Becky Wright and acoustic duo Dom & James. There will also be a raffle, disco, refreshments and auction, so bring your purses and get booked in!
