MP opens Mundesley church-based Dementia café

2018: Norman Lamb, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, opened a dementia café on Friday January 19 at the All Saints Community Rooms in Mundesley, run by the local church. Tony Rothe reports.

Over the past year, considerable repairs and improvements have been made to the Community Rooms, including new windows, improved seating to suit elderly and dementia sufferers, and an upgrade to the toilets to make them disabled-accessible. This was made possible by a concerted fund-raising effort, and generous help from local businesses and charities.

These resulted in increased use of the venue, the most successful being a monthly Soup ‘n’ Pud event which regularly attracts at least forty people. But the folk at the church decided more was needed.

The vision of a Dementia inclusive café clearly stirred a passion in many people in and around Mundesley, and the project soon attracted both donations and volunteers, with several fundraising events taking place.

“It has been incredible even amongst the volunteers as we have found new friends and look forward to serving the community together” said Wendy and Eleanor. “The opening today by Norman Lamb, pictured right, was a great start and we hope that we will make a difference; certainly, people were saying that they had enjoyed themselves and were pleased that they had come, the atmosphere echoed this with talking and laughter.”

The Dementia café, known as Open Door, will be open each third Friday of the month 10am -11.30am in All Saints’ Community Rooms on Cromer Road, Mundesley,  NR11 8JG.

The organisers would like to thank all the local business and charities that gave their support, including:
•             Aviva Community fund
•             Tesco
•             The friends of Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat
•             Mundesley Fish and Fry chip shop
•             Affinity Digital Agents
•             Trunch Village Stores

Revd Andrew Jones, Rector of the Trunch Group of parishes, pictured, right, with two of the cafe customers, said “Please pray for us in this new venture that, it is hoped, the café will reach and support some of the most vulnerable in our communities.”
