Norfolk Christian charity funds Big C Cloths of Kindness

An acclaimed project funded by Dreams and Visions and developed by a Norfolk Christian artist, has presented two Cloths of Kindness, stitched by people using the Big C Centre with their thoughts about kindness, to the Big C Acute Centre at the NNUH.

‘The Cloth of Kindness’, a textile arts project funded by Norfolk Christian charity Dreams and Visions, held a presentation on Friday, January 26 to donate two ‘Cloths of Kindness’ to the Big C Acute Centre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).

The project was conceived by Norfolk television producer, director and artist Sally-Anne Lomas

Sally-Anne explained: “The Cloth of Kindness is a health and wellbeing project which brings together people of all ages and abilities to embroider their thoughts and experiences of kindness on individual patches which are then sewn together to make a Cloth of Kindness.

“Patches were hand-stitched by Big C service-users in the Big C Centre and chapel in the NNUH. Contributions were made by both males and females, young and old. The youngest contributor was Elspeth Wright, aged 6 (pictured above)”.

NNUHClothofKindness640The Cloths of Kindness will be used at the Big C Centre by patients in the relaxation room following treatment, where it is hoped they will bring comfort. Speaking at the event, Carolyn Sexton, Big C Chair, thanked everyone who took part and the volunteers involved for donating their time to this important project for the charity.

The first Cloth of Kindness was made by Christian artist Sally-Anne Lomas and was inspired by the writings of Julian of Norwich, the 14th century mystic famous for the phrase ‘All shall be well and all shall be well’ and the beautiful embroidered letters of Lorina Bulmer, resident in the Great Yarmouth Workhouse in the late C19th.

Sally-Anne Lomas said, “The sewing skills needed to participate in a Cloth of Kindness are basic and easily learnt. It is a low energy, creative activity open to everyone and the focus on kindness is uplifting. Each patch is personal and unique, but sewn together they make something even greater as a whole.”

Nikki Morris, Deputy CEO of Big C said, “This is one of the most exciting projects I’ve been involved with as it meets biological, psychological, social and spiritual need.”

The Cloth of Kindness Project has been made possible by the support of Christian Charity ‘Dreams and Visions’ and with their help it is hoped to expand the Cloth of Kindness project into Big C’s centres at Great Yarmouth. The Cloth of Kindness team are also hoping to work in King’s Lynn and with Dementia Patients later in the year.
