Gorleston carol concert a big success

Joy to the World, the Christmas concert organised by St. Andrew's and Cliff Park Community Churches in Gorleston with the Norfolk Fellowship Brass of the Salvation Army proved a big success.

The concert, on Tuesday December 17, was attended by around 150 people, and over £1,000 was raised for the Identity Youth Project and The Salvation Army. Despite heavy rain many people braved the weather to attend an evening which was both a celebration and worship.

The first half of the evening was hosted by Tony Mallion, and included popular carols and Christmas music from the 30-member band and soloists, conducted by David Woodrow.  The rest of the evening was a carol service, led by Major Derek Tyrell, and included a short talk from band member and former member of the St. Andrew's ministry team Pat Kane.

Anna Price, chair of the Identity Youth Project, briefly explained their work among young people and churches in Gorleston, Bradwell and Belton while Major Tyrell spoke about the work of the Salvation Army's local Toys and Tins Christmas appeal.

A bucket collection and sale of interval refreshments organised by Gillian and Brian Philpot helped to produce the total of £1,014 which will be divided between the two causes. Iceland in the High Street kindly allowed their car park to be used for the event.

Organisers Janet Bowden and Tony Mallion said they were thrilled with the support for the evening. 'We really felt the weather might deter people but it didn't do so at all, and we're so grateful on a cold night and a busy time for everyone that so many came' said Janet.
