Advent and Christmas events at Norwich Cathedral
From an Advent Open Evening to Carols in the Cloister and an array of special services and concerts with Norwich Cathedral Choir, there is lots to look forward to at Norwich Cathedral this festive season.
The Cathedral’s countdown to Christmas begins with a beautiful Candlelit Advent Procession at 6pm on Sunday 27 November.

Candlelit Advent Procession
Sunday 27 November, 6pm
Join us for carols and readings in a candlelit procession as we begin our preparations for Christmas.
Silence in the Cathedral
Monday 28 November, 7pm
An hour of silence, with solo music at the beginning and end, to reflect on the changing seasons and specifically Advent, the season of hopeful expectation.
Convened by the Silence in the Cathedral Group. Admission is free, donations welcome.
Advent Open Evening
Friday 2 December, 6.30pm-9pm
Celebrate the beginning of Advent with our free open evening which includes a short service featuring farm animals to bless the outdoor crib and carols with Norwich Cathedral Choir.
We suggest gathering at the West Front from 6.30pm for the 7pm service before exploring the rest of the Cathedral. There will be festive activities for children, our gift shop will be open with lots of ideas for the perfect presents and you will also be able to enjoy some tasty festive treats in The Refectory Bakery and Café!
Tree of Remembrance
Friday 2 December until Thursday 5 January
Remember a loved one by placing a star on the Tree of Remembrance beside the Cathedral’s outdoor crib outside the Hostry. Donations will go to Norwich-based homelessness charity St Martins.
Handel’s Messiah by Candlelight
Saturday 10 December, 7.30pm
Join Norwich Cathedral Choir, Norwich Baroque and a cast of internationally acclaimed soloists for our annual performance of Handel’s much-loved oratorio, in the beautiful candlelit surroundings of the Cathedral’s nave.

Christmas with Norwich Cathedral Choir

Join Norwich Cathedral Choir for a feast of festive music, both sacred and secular, with carols for choir and audience, not forgetting the great 12 Days of Christmas sing-along!

Carols in the Cloister
Saturday 17 December, 4pm
Enjoy a carol singalong full of festive favourites with the girl choristers and members of the Cathedral’s Chamber Choir in the stunning surrounds of the Cloister. Warm, colourful and festive attire is encouraged!
Free admission, with a retiring collection.
Christmas Procession with Carols
Thursday 22 December, 7pm
Friday 23 December, 7pm
Saturday 24 December, 3.30pm
Hear the story of Christmas told with carols and readings as the Cathedral Choir moves in procession through the whole Cathedral.
Saturday 24 December, 12 noon
Fun for all the family as the Christmas Story is brought to life in this informal service where children are invited to dress as characters from the Nativity and the Cathedral Children’s Choir will sing.
Saturday 24 December, 11.15pm
The traditional service sung by the Cathedral Choir to welcome in Christmas Day and celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher, will be the preacher at this service.
Family Eucharist of Christmas Day
Sunday 25 December, 10.30am
Celebrate Christmas Day at this special service sung by Norwich Cathedral Choir. The Acting Dean, the Revd Dr Peter Doll, will be the preacher at this service.
Festal Evensong on Christmas Day
Sunday 25 December, 3.30pm
A special Evensong for Christmas Day with carols sung by Norwich Cathedral Choir.
A Sequence of Music and Readings for the Epiphany
Sunday 15 January 2023, 6.30pm
Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir presents a musical reflection on the Epiphany, with choral works by Jonathan Dove, Francis Poulenc and Morten Lauridsen.
Admission free, with retiring collection – no booking required.
The Epiphany Procession
Sunday 22 January 2023, 3.30pm
Norwich Cathedral Choir leads this processional service with readings, choral music and carols celebrating the season of The Epiphany.
All welcome – no ticket required.
Britten: A Ceremony of Carols
Sunday 29 January, 6.30pm
The boys and girls of Norwich Cathedral Choir, accompanied by harpist Elizabeth Green, sing Britten’s ever-popular A Ceremony of Carols – first performed in Norwich Castle in 1942.
Christmas shopping in the Cathedral Gift Shop
The Cathedral’s Gift Shop is open daily, offering lots of inspiration for the perfect presents, as well as Christmas cards and festive decorations. The shop is also running a festive offer of four selected packs of Cathedral Christmas Cards for £18.
