Churches launch out with new Christmas musical

The Mitre Benefice is to stage the premiere of Edenbridge, a musical Christmas production for all the family.

Author and playwright Hilary Harrison has written a new script especially for the Norwich performances and recruited a cast of actors and singers from a variety of churches across Norfolk.

Professional Shakespearean actor Dominic Rye has provided support with direction, while expert graphic design from Andrew Piper and costumes by fashion designer Leah Gibby look to make a colourful performance.

The musical play is set in 1940s wartime England, where Great Uncle Jacob is the owner of an ancient, rambling and once beautiful hotel, the Edenbridge. The building has frankly seen better days, yet oozes hospitality and warmth to all its guests thanks to its generous owner.

The housekeeper, the strict Mrs Macrumb, has worked there for years and is loyal to Jacob. She realises something odd has been going on since his estranged sister, Jesse Bell, came to live there. But she can’t put her finger on it.

Meanwhile Rachel, Edward and Esther, the children of Jacob’s nephew, lose their parents in the Blitz, and come to live at Edenbridge. They assume it’s for the duration of the war, but it’s clear Jacob is keen to get to know them and be a father figure in their lives.

Christmas hasn’t been celebrated at Edenbridge since Jesse moved in. She hasn’t allowed it. The children have been told to avoid her, and she has a special interest in a part of the garden which appears to be full of gnomes.

As the struggle against their great aunt escalates, the children are joined by Santa, some reindeer and a variety of smaller animals.

The show will be running for two nights at The Sanctuary (St Alban Church) on Grove Walk, Norwich NR1 2QF. Performances are at 7pm on Friday December 2 and Saturday December 3. Doors open at 6.30pm.

Booking essential: www.stn.org.uk/edenbridge. Tickets free. Themed refreshments available before and after the performance.
