Buxton scouts host successful parade and service

The sun shone on the North East Norfolk District Scouts’ St George’s Day Parade and Celebration which was held in Buxton Lamas on 23 April.

The event was organised by 1st Buxton Lamas Sea Scout Group and consisted of a parade through the village followed by a service and circus-themed celebrations on the playing field. Around 500 young people attended, along with family members, representing Scout groups from all over North and East Norfolk.

The parade began at 1.00pm led by retired 1st Buxton Lamas Group Scout Leader, Paul Gillingwater, accompanied by the Cawston Marching Band. They marched through the village from Dudwick Park in Brook Street to their Sea Scouts HQ. at Balay Park, Aylsham Road.

The salute was taken by North East Norfolk District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen accompanied by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk The Lady Dannatt, and joined by HM Deputy-Lieutenant Mr Louis Baugh, with Clive Gritten BEM JP, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of North East Norfolk District Scout Council,  and watched by many other Civic Dignitaries and representatives from local Associations who support Scouting.

Flag Bearers formed a Guard of Honour either side of the gathering on the playing field where the St George’s Day Service was led by Revd Canon Julie Boyd – the North-east Norfolk Scouts District Chaplain and Team Rector of the Aylsham & District Team Ministry, who was accompanied and assisted by Fr. Peter Wygnanski - Parish Administrator of Our Lady of Refuge Cromer & St Joseph, Sheringham.   The celebration included the renewal of Scout Promises by all members with presentations and there was plenty of interaction with the young people.

The guests then moved into the Sea Scouts HQ. to enjoy delicious afternoon tea prepared by the Group’s volunteers, and enjoyed a film showing the types of activities which Scouting in North East Norfolk offers.

The nominated charity this year, chosen by the Buxton scouts, was Nelson’s Journey, who received the St Georges Day Collection. The 1st Smiles Scout Group, formed in partnership with Nelson’s Journey,  were represented and marched in the parade alongside 1st Buxton Lamas Group.

Lorraine Henriksen, District Secretary of the North East Norfolk District Scout Council, said “The 1st Buxton Lamas scouts had worked hard to ensure that there were lots of interesting and age appropriate activities for the young people to participate in, including Circus Ferrel on site providing a workshop, Bert’s Amazing Creatures offering an opportunity for children to handle some of the animals, learn about their habitats and how to look after them,  Crafting,  Axe Throwing (for Explorers and Scouts), ‘Caving’ and Climbing Walls to name just a few…  all providing a memorable and enjoyable event for everyone.”
