Sheringham church draws in football fans

2018: Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham has been showing live screenings of nearly all the World Cup games in which England have played, although Saturday’s third place decider will not be shown. Tony Rothe reports.

The church’s technical team installed the necessary equipment, including a TV aerial, for the games to be projected onto the large screen, to be enjoyed by dozens of England fans. The screenings were not publicly advertised, but all those who attend the church, including the youth and kids’ groups, and especially the church football teams, and their family and friends, were all warmly welcomed.
The very first game, when England beat Tunisia 2:1, could be shown because the building had already been hired out to other users. For this reason, Saturday afternoon’s game against Belgium will not be shown.  “I’m not sure how many would have turned up to watch anyway!” said a church spokesman.
The games which were screened were against Panama on June 24 (England won 6:1), Belgium on June 28 (England lost 1:0), Columbia on July 3 (England won 4:3 on penalties), Sweden on July 7 (England won 2:0) and the semi-final against Croatia on July 11 (England lost 2:1).

Fans were invited to bring their own refreshments with them, but alcohol was not allowed.
“There was a great atmosphere in the building during the screenings” said youth pastor Peter Skivington; “And it was great to engage with so many people who would otherwise not visit Lighthouse”
