Mundesley church tackles food poverty

People in Mundesley in North Norfolk are receiving food supplies from Tesco stores thanks to the tireless work of volunteers in the local parish church.

All Saints Church operates a community larder on Friday mornings, providing essential support to those in need. It has eight dedicated volunteers who help serve up to 50 visitors each week.

In addition to offering food and supplies, the larder also hosts advisers from North Norfolk District Council who will provide guidance and support to anyone who needs it. Furthermore, the Mundesley Community Police Officer visits once a month to speak with anyone requiring assistance or advice.

Mundesley All Saints receives food as part of the Community Food Connection surplus food scheme, which involves local Tesco stores and food surplus redistribution charity FareShare.

Douglas Tuthill, Manager of Mundesley All Saints Community Rooms, said: “We are extremely grateful to Tesco and FareShare for their ongoing support. Our purpose is to wholeheartedly serve our community and strive to see lives transformed in Mundesley. As a community larder, we maintain a non-judgmental environment, welcoming everyone without exception. This inclusive approach ensures that anyone can come in and take the produce they need.”

Claire De Silva, Tesco Head of Community, said: “Working with community groups such as Mundesley All Saints to help them get the food they need is such an important service for us to be able to provide. Their dedication towards their community is amazing, and we are pleased to do what we can to support them.”

FareShare is the UK’s biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste. Two-thirds of the organisations provide food to support children and families. They take good-to-eat surplus food from across the food industry, sort it in regional warehouses across the UK, and pass it onto a network of nearly 8,500 charities and community groups, including food banks and pantries, hostels, refuges, community centres, older people’s lunch clubs, school clubs and hospices.
